The Kayak is distinguished from a canoe by having a covered deck and typically a spray deck to protect the canoeist (kayaker) from spray. Kayaks are propelled using a double bladed single paddle. Traditionally Kayaks were used by natives of North America, North eastern Asia & Greenland for sea and river travel. The modern day Kayak has been much developed from its early routes and has diversified into a large number of types ranging from white-water kayaks, Slalom kayaks, Sea Kayaks and Ocean Kayaks. Kayaks are made from a wide number of materials from traditional wood construction through to carbon Kevlar composites.

Kayak Paddles
Kayak paddles are made from a wide variety of materials and fall into a number of categories. Paddles have been designed and manufactured for all types and styles of kayak and come in numerous sizes and designs Main categories of kayaking paddles include un-feathered (straight) and feathered. A straight un-feathered kayak paddle configuration will have paddle blades at both ends that when viewed down the shaft are flat where as kayak paddles with feathered blades will have paddle blades offset by 30 to 90 degrees when viewed down the paddle shaft. Kayak paddle shafts can also differ ranging from the traditional straight shaft to the kayak paddle crank shaft where the shaft is offset at a slight angle with the intention of reducing strain on the kayaker's wrists whilst paddling. The weight of a kayak paddle is also a factor with manufacturers producing progressively lighter paddles in recent times this to add to the comfort of the kayaker whilst paddling and again reduces strain on the wrists. Lightness has been achieved by kayak paddle manufacturers with the introduction of light weight carbon and Kevlar composite materials enabling paddle strength to be maintained and huge savings in weight over conventional materials. Cheaper paddles are generally made of plastic blades mounted on an aluminum shaft as with all things comfort comes at a cost but with modern materials now becoming more prevalent the price of manufacture has come down meaning quality kayak paddles can be found at reasonable prices.
