The Kayak is distinguished from a canoe by having a covered deck and typically a spray deck to protect the canoeist (kayaker) from spray. Kayaks are propelled using a double bladed single paddle. Traditionally Kayaks were used by natives of North America, North eastern Asia & Greenland for sea and river travel. The modern day Kayak has been much developed from its early routes and has diversified into a large number of types ranging from white-water kayaks, Slalom kayaks, Sea Kayaks and Ocean Kayaks. Kayaks are made from a wide number of materials from traditional wood construction through to carbon Kevlar composites.

Slalom Kayaks have been specifically designed with competition in mind allowing the kayaker the maximum amount of maneuverability and tight turning. Slalom Kayaks are similar in design to white-water kayaks and share many of their characteristics being comparatively short in length and having high cockpit to limit the seepage of water into the kayaks hull. Designed for specialist competition the slalom kayak is not recommended for use by a new or novice kayaker as a certain degree of experience and skill is required by the kayaker to paddle one. Slalom kayaks have sacrificed some of their forward tracking and anti rolling
in order to allow quick turns to be made this makes them inherently less stable and more prone to roll they require a high level of expertise to paddle correctly. Often used in competition white-water where the aim is for the kayaker to complete a designated whitewater course negotiating slalom poles and gates in the shortest time possible. Points are deducted in the form of time penalties for the missing of gates. Slalom Kayaking is a high energy exhilarating sport with a high degree of difficulty and requiring a high degree of technical skill and know how.
